STUDENT WORKER EVALUATIONS
Before the end of each spring semester, work supervisors are asked to complete a "Student Worker Evaluation" (see appendix H) for each student. Those students who resign or terminate early should have their evaluations sent to the Financial Aid Office when they resign or are terminated.
The evaluation forms are intended for use in the Financial Aid Office. They are kept on file for two years. They can be used if a prospective employer requests information regarding the student's work habits/ performance.
Supervisors need to discuss the evaluations with their student workers whether it is positive or negative. Negative criticism is not pleasant to give or receive, and students feel less threatened if the following guidelines are used:
1. Be constructive and specific -- What are examples of poor performance and how can the performance be improved.
2. Maintain privacy -- Never criticize a student in front of other students or employees.
3. Be positive -- Begin the discussion on a positive note. Most students perform some facet of their work satisfactorily, so discuss such attributes first and then discuss what areas need improvement. Don't say "Weaknesses are." Say "Areas for improvement." If the student realizes the supervisor is trying to help, then the student is more likely to listen to what is said.
