WORK STANDARDS

Certain work standards are necessary in all jobs, and work supervisors are essential in determining these standards. Supervisors should consider what standards and habits they will expect from their student workers. The standards should be clearly communicated to the students at the beginning of the year so that they will know what is expected of them and for what they are accountable. An orientation meeting for student workers in each area would be helpful at the beginning of each fall semester. A formalized list of work expectations and guidelines should be given to each student. A meeting of this nature is appropriate to explain the "do's" and "do not's" of the job as well as what procedures are to be followed when illness or other reasons keep a student away from daily work assignments.

Work experience is a learning experience for all students. They benefit most from a positive work place in which the supervisor maintains high but realistic expectations for the students.
